Summer’s here and with the school term about to end, homeowners are hard-pressed to find ways to keep their children wholesomely occupied and, preferably, close to home territory. A swimming pool provides the perfect solution and will be enjoyed by children, teenagers, and adults alike. For swimming pool contractors, summer is the best time of the year for their business. This year there is renewed optimism amidst a slowly rebounding real estate market and lessons learned by pool builders who managed to weather the real estate storm of the last few years.

We used our Local Search Toolkit.com and the keywords pool builders, swimming pool construction, swimming pool contractors, swimming pool builders, custom swimming pools to find the best citation and review sites in six cities (Seattle, Boston, Miami, Denver, San Diego, and Chicago).

Anyone who has ever managed more than one Google Places listing and is interested in the metrics Google is kind enough to share about those listings, knows it is a real pain in the rear to click on each listing and grab the data for use in your client reports. Well today, my friend, is your day. The good folks at seOverflow and LocalSearchToolkit.com have create a solution that we are happy to provide you free of charge*. This solution does require you to have an account with Mozenda (14 day free trial), a Windows PC, and of course a Google Places account with multiple listings.

Here is a snapshot of what an export from this report might look like for two listings. You can use this data anyway you want since you’ll be exporting a CSV file (click to zoom).

If you haven’t used Mozenda before it is the world’s easiest to use ‘create your own screen scraper tool’. Basically you point and click and ‘teach’ Mozenda what data you want to collect along the way. You save these series of actions as something called an Agent. Agents execute your commands and store data in something called a Collection. It really is a lot more simple than it sounds. Let’s look at some pictures:

Open up Internet Explorer, visit Google Places and make sure you are NOT logged in. If you are logged in, sign out.

First your going to want to download the Agent we have created for you. Note that as Google changes their interface this agent may break. I am not promising updates to this agent, so at some point you may need to edit or re-create a similar agent to do this job. Once you have downloaded the file, please unzip it to reveal the google-places-analytics.xml file inside.

Second you are going to want to open up this Agent in your Mozenda Agent Builder Tool (desktop software). In Mozenda, click File, Open From File and open up the XML file that was inside the zip file you downloaded.

Next click on Set User Input %email%, click Additional Settings, enter your Google Places email address, then click save. Then click on Set User Input %password%, click Additional Settings, enter your Google Places password, click Save. Save the Agent at this point by clicking the disk icon in the top menubar.

Now we are going to test your agent. When testing the agent Mozenda goes through all the motions we’ve programmed it to do and even shows you the data it collects. You cannot however download data from a test. You are also not charged for the tests you run (most accounts have limited pageviews associated with them).

If you are test was successful, congrats you are now ready to move on to Part 2, which is running the Agent Live and downloading your data.

Mozenda Agents are run live using the web console. Go to Mozenda.com and log-in. Click on Agents in the lefthand nav. You should see an agent named ‘google places analytics 2′ in the list on the right of your screen, click on that Agent name.

Click the ‘Run Now’ button. Your Agent will be placed in the queue and then run when resources are available. On this screen you could also schedule the Agent to run at desired intervals such as once per month.

When your Agent is complete, click on Collections. You should see a Collection named ‘google places analytics 2′, click on the name. You should now see a view of the data that was downloaded. At the bottom you’ll see a button to export your data, click that choose your format, and download your stuff!

Have fun and good luck!
